Facebook has revolutionized modern culture in the last 10 years.  It updates your network on your whereabouts and professional growth.  It connects people who haven’t communicated in 30 years.  It allows for private groups for your business, your cousins, and your parties.  It provides platforms for (un)productive debate.  It gives you a hit of dopamine when your friends “like” your status.

And it distracts you.

Here are 4 tips for minimizing Facebook distraction:

1) Don’t go on first thing in the morning.  Get your Most Important Task of the day done first.  And/or meditate.

2) Use Newsfeed sparingly.  Opt to prioritize page visits to your most important groups and friends.  Download News Feed Eradicator.

3) Take a Facebook Fast.  It could be on Saturdays.  It could be 3 days a week.  It could be for 30 days.  Worst case scenario: you’ll appreciate it that much more upon returning!

4) Close excess tabs, single task, and use the Pomodoro technique.  Set a timer for 20-30 minutes, and focus on your task at hand.  You could check FB after.

Focusing your mind and avoiding distraction is incredibly important in our modern, high-information lifestyle.

Will you use Facebook, or will Facebook use you?
