True Thoughts on Education

Topics schools often neglect:

– Financial Intelligence (perhaps important to thriving as an adult)
– Entrepreneurship (I think I was 24 when I learned to spell that word)
– Emotional Intelligence (how often is one asked, “how are you feeling?”)
– True critical thinking (start with fleshing out definitions of words)
– Passion (just do what you’re supposed to do)
– Organizational/productivity (outside of the conventional calendar/agenda…what about GTD?)

I picture a world (you may say that I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one…) in which the vast majority of children receive such benefits.  The ticker though: such information is received voluntarily.

If you continually force me to eat cake, I’ll develop an aversion to it.

That’s why the word “education” often has a negative connotation for kids.

Real education is intrinsically motivated.  Real education is playful.  Real education is autonomous.  Real education is beautiful, inspiring, an exponential fountain of knowledge from which to quench curiosity.

Are teachers the problem?  No.  Administrators?  No.  State standards?  (Well, perhaps).  BUT why play the blame game?  Everyone has good intentions.  Everyone wants to see children thrive.

Then how to create change?

Innovate.

Like Uber, like FedEx, like Praxis.

And, get in touch with your own curiosity.

Cheers,
JB
