I participated in a Sales Mastermind hosted by my friend Nick, joined by 5 or 6 others. It was a valuable 90 minutes! Here are my nuggets of takeaways:
Be ready for rejection. Rejection is easier over time, fortunately. So get at it!
Rule of thumb: don’t waste anyone’s time on a sales call.
“Sales is nothing more than showing someone what they want and how to get it.”
How to Prep
It’s crucial to know your buyer, do your prep work. This can take a couple of angles:
- Know specific pain point “I see you’re currently spending $10,000 on X, we can offer for $6,000.”
- Personalized/rapport building. Works better in person (phone is less of a workable medium). “Do you know X restaurant in Providence, RI? Oh, you do?” Then dive into pitch.
We’re all humans, so breaking this ice and creating connection is valuable.
Negotiating Pay
This was discussed in depth. My key takeaway: look at the employers’ perspective and how much profit you will bring them. Then when you ask for a certain cut, it’s framed in how the salary (hiring you) benefits them.
