To excel, one needs to commit.
Do deep work.
Find flow.
Eliminate attention from everything else the world can lure.
Yet, there are many choices to which to devote time, attention, and energy.
Some say the best way to shield off this paradox of choice is to ignore the abundant options. Choose the first engaging option, and forget all else.
Definitely, getting stuck in analysis paralysis is not helpful.
But, conscious living means staying aware. It’s overviewing possible directions and choices, and selecting intentionally.
It’s thinking, “I’m choosing to dive deep in this direction, and I am content because I am aware of the choices foregone.”
Aware of the opportunity costs.
Many dogmatically “commit” without conscientiously considering opportunity costs.
Such people are attached to beliefs about the nobility of head-on commitment: once you start, never stop, because that’s quitting.
But often, this approach carries unconscious momentum.
Yes, it’s only possible to excel by saying “no” to opportunities.
But evading knowledge of opportunities is risky.
It risks getting to the end of life, and realizing you weren’t awake.
Life is not a dress rehearsal.
Commit fervently, but choose deliberately.
