The Three Highest Forms of Intellectual Maturity

  1. The ability to observe without evaluating – to describe reality akin to what a video camera would pick up, without cluttering your description with your own interpretations.

  2. To genuinely, curiously seek to understand another with whom you disagree, without becoming upset or eager to defend. Expressing “tell me more,” “what do you mean,” and “I’m curious,” so that you actually allow the other to be heard without immediately counter-arguing (as if disagreeing had some sort of expiration date).

  3. Employing metaphor in communication. Metaphor simultaneously conceals and reveals truth. Drawing from it abundantly and spontaneously indicates cross-pollination in the mind, and it assists others in grasping the essence of your points.
