Walls

Early, we learn to put guards, walls, armor, and masks around and over our True Selves.

Why? For protection.

But protection from what?

From feeling:

-shame
-terror
-disconnection

Why would we feel those?

For if we spoke our truth, we feared our caretakers own walls might be penetrated.

And to defend, his or her own protector parts may have resorted to shaming, anger, or love withdrawal.

Thus is the tragic nature of the intergenerational transfer of trauma.

So we build our forts to avoid the pain.

And we keep the walls sturdy into adulthood.

Even just now while reading this, you may have somatically experienced a jolt of adrenaline. That’s the protector part trying to avoid you feeling your unprocessed sadness.

And what’s the greater cost of your walls?

The cost is joy.

The joy of:

-Authenticity
-Freedom to self-express
-Real connection with others
-Relaxation and acceptance of what is
-Honesty

If we avoid sadness, we avoid joy.

So be real.

And pave the path to a harmonious world.
