Goals

School ruined goals.

Because school “made me” set goals as an exercise.

Because I “had to” do it, I hated it.

The word “goals” became tainted.

BUT….

School or no-school, goals are misery.

Because they are focused on the future. You get attached to them, and frustrated that you are not there.

Systems and daily habits are better.

I started daily blogging, and I look up and have nearly 500 posts.
I committed to non-zero days on NOCP, and 3 years later the organization is alive.
I began to read a few pages each morning, and 3 months later I’d read 6 books.

So what matters is the micro-habits. When it comes to future orientation, I prefer setting overall direction. I also like big, hairy, ambitious 10 year visions.

But goals are dangerous.

If you’re going to set them, they need specificity.

The key to such specific goals is seeing the sequence of action.

Trace back the goal to the next step, and see the following steps too.

The more specificity and excitement you feel about next steps, the healthier goals become.

So anyway, there are different angles on this concept of goals.

The key is to cultivate intrinsic motivation that empowers you right now.

And makes you come alive.
