Choose Yourself – Takeaways

I’m on page 146 of Choose Yourself, by James Altucher. Here are my takeaways so far:

The traditional economy has changed fundamentally.
With credit card debt, student loan debt, and an economy propped up by inflation via the Federal Reserve, the traditional career blueprints are going out the window. But opportunity is ripe to craft your own income, your own brand, your own hours, your own purpose. Rather than clinging to the shrinking template of the past, you can Choose Yourself and be on the side of the creative, entrepreneurial future. There are no shortcuts, but the opportunities are abundant.

The foundation of a thriving life (fulfillment, wealth, relationships) is the Daily Practice:

  • Take care of your Physical Body. Sleep 8 hours, eat well, move, floss(!).
  • Take care of the Emotional Body. Surround yourself with good people, avoid gossip, express gratitude.
  • Take care of the Mental. Write down ten ideas a day about anything. That’s 3,600 ideas a year. One of those ideas will be a home run.
  • Take care of the Spiritual Body. Altucher hates the word “spiritual,” because of its New Age baggage. His main point is, be present. Start with this: label every thought as “future” or “past.” You will begin to notice your presence.

Repeat the phrase “I love myself” repeatedly.
Even if you don’t believe yourself, eventually, you will.

Altucher, who has gone broke twice only to re-build himself, is refreshingly vulnerable and authentic, and funny. I highly recommend the book.

I’ve already started my list of ten ideas for the day. Have you?
